Sustainable employees don’t happen by chance — they are built.

When I started at Stretch 20 years ago, I could never have imagined that I would still be here today. But looking back, it’s actually quite easy to understand why. It’s not just about having “ended up in the right place.” It’s about Stretch consciously building a culture where people feel good, are encouraged to grow, and want to stay.

For me, it has never been just about having a job. It has been about being part of something where I can feel proud, both of what I do and of how the company operates. And perhaps most importantly: understanding that sustainability is not only about the environment or business goals, but also about people.

Sustainable employees are not built by luck

It’s rarely one single factor that makes people stay with an employer for a long time. It’s about the bigger picture and about the organization taking responsibility for it.
At Stretch, I’ve experienced sustainability being created by:

  • creating an environment where people feel safe to express their opinions and feel listened to
  • creating transparency, so people understand why decisions are made and trust is strengthened
  • encouraging development, even when it means being challenged
  • giving people the opportunity to influence their work, so it feels meaningful and truly owned

When there is a balance between expectations and support, between freedom and direction, and between performance and well-being, employees become sustainable — not just efficient.

Growing without having to move on

One of the biggest reasons I’ve stayed is that Stretch has always given me room to grow. I’ve had the opportunity to learn new things, gain new perspectives, take on different roles, and grow alongside the changes in my life.

During some periods, the pace has been high and the challenges significant, while at other times life has required something different. What’s been special is that there has always been an understanding of that and a willingness to create long-term sustainability rather than quick fixes.

It’s the relationships — but above all, the culture

Of course, the people matter a lot. I’ve laughed countless times over the years, learned an incredible amount, and sometimes worked very hard. But what has always made me feel that I’m in the right place is the culture that carries you through — even during tough times. A culture where you feel included, where you are seen, and where appreciation doesn’t only come when you deliver perfectly, but also when you take responsibility, help others, and are a good colleague.

So why stay for 20 years?

Because you are part of a company that feels genuine.
Because you are given the opportunity to grow, develop, and make an impact.
And because every day I feel that I work in a place where people truly matter.
